Camera Withdrawal
Well, I finally had to do it. I sent my Fujifilm X100 back to New Jersey for a factory repair.
I believe my camera is suffering from the sticking aperture blade problem. When I shot in aperture priority mode as I normally do, it would act up. At f/2 I could usually get a correct exposure, always subject to a max shutter speed of 1/1000sec, a normal constraint. But when stopped down especially towards f/11 or f/16 the camera delivered consistently overexposed frames. Even then, sometimes it would look fine but more and more often the shots I got were overexposed.
I also tried to take a series of manual exposures aimed at a single subject and the camera exhibited the same behavior, especially as I stopped down towards the apertures approaching f/16.
I tried to convince myself that it was me, that I needed to adapt to the camera’s idiosyncracies. But the issue just became too nagging to ignore and I know its not something I can control or anticipate as normal behavior.
So, its on the way to Fuji’s repair facilities in New Jersey. This is an issue that has popped up for other owners and from what I’ve been able to research is solved with a new lens assembly. I just hope the fix is permanent and doesn’t reoccur. I’ll keep you posted.

Photography and Sailing are my Passions
In my younger years you could always find me at the local sailing club. In the summer, I was always on the water sailing. In the winter, I’d be either working on scraping the mahogany hulls to bare wood for refinishing or I’d be at the sailing club hanging out with my mates usually playing table tennis. But everything revolved around sailing in one way or the other.
Now, my passion is photography. My camera is always at my side no matter the time of day or the weather.
That’s why this past weekend I was in hog heaven as I combined my two life passions, sailing and photography. My dream job would be covering sailing events and world class racing with my Nikon. With the America’s Cup in town, I had a great time on the shores of San Diego bay shooting world class sailors and catamarans. Double delight!

A Potpourri from my Daily Walk
Okay, there’s not very much to relate these photographs to one another except for just a few things.
First, they’re all images taken on my daily noon walk. Then they’re all taken with my wonderful Fujifilm X100 camera. Lots of folks have an opinion on this camera and there are very few who don’t lean hard one way or the other, they either love it or want nothing to do with it. I fall into the former category, its an amazing camera. Lastly, they’re all processed in my favorite Nik applications, Color Efex Pro4 and Silver Efex Pro2. Finally, two of these shots are of the new Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine building. Its grand opening is this month so I thought I’d include these two images.
So, that’s my story on how seemingly unrelated photographs have a few things in common.

Beautiful Day in San Diego for the America’s Cup
Unlike yesterday when the weather was just awful, today was a beautiful, clear day in San Diego. Also unlike yesterday, there were a lot of people at the embarcadero. So many people in fact, that we had a hard time finding a parking place. We were on our way to do something else, when we found a parking lot that was affordable and not far from the broadway pier.
Anyway, we found a great spot to shoot from and the sunny weather made for some great photographs. I’m going to see if I can break away from work one day this week to get more of this and if not, try again for next Sunday, the last day of the America’s Cup races in San Diego.
