Cataloging my Project365

I’m currently well into my third Project365.  The first two projects were all shot on digital.  Digital makes cataloging images so much easier than it is for this Project365 all shot on film.

With digital, the time and date are all automatically embedded in exif data automatically making it so easy to find images from each day and picking my choice for the project.  With analog, all I have is a roll of exposed images with nothing to let me know when I took it or what camera settings I used.

To solve my cataloging challenge I turned to my trusty iPhone.  I could have taken a traditional approach and used a paper notebook to write down image location, exposure data, etc.  Instead I use Day One, an iOS journaling app.  It allows me to take a photo with my iPhone that embeds in the day’s journal entry giving me the data, time and geo coordinates for reference.  I can also note the exposure data next to the image and what I was trying to achieve with composition and light.

Here’s what I do.  I take an image of the same scene as the first image of that day on my roll of film.  That way, I know the image on the exposed film that starts the day. Every other image belongs to the same set for that day up to the indexed image for the following day.  Sometimes I’ll take multiple images in the journal as I wander just to give some context to later images and even to capture the exif data and notes that might help give some reference for later images.  Generally, I”m not shooting more than five or six images daily so this process really works well for me.

Here’s a bit of a surprise.  I recently upgraded to an iPhone 6s that has a twelve megapixel camera.  I have to say the images are really pretty darn good from a technical perspective.  I am usually not taking any time at all to frame and shoot these images since I never intend them for anything other than indexing my Project365.  I’ll go as far to say that I’m not even trying to hold the phone steady as I take a shot.  What’s surprising to me is how sharp and good these images are.  Dare I say I could probably shoot my next Project365 with my iPhone and be happy with it.  Something to think about on Janaury 1, 2017.

Here are a few images from my phone.  Let me know what you think.  There my be images that are very similar to ones I’ve posted in my Project365 but now you know why.

As always, thanks for reading.
