Some Personal Thoughts as I Near the End of a Project 366

Many of us who started a Project366 on the first day of this year are quickly approaching the final marker.  Today is day 311 for me.

This is my second Project366 and I have to say it’s going to be my last one.  In my earlier, more adventurous times, the challenge of a photograph every day seemed like a good learning opportunity and a project kept me personally accountable.  I was also committed to others who follow along on Flickr where I chose to share my project.  It was a good learning experience, my skills have definitely grown and I’ve matured as a photographer in many ways.  I’m increasingly selective in the shots I take but with a Project366, not as selective as I intend to be after the end of the year.

Taking the shot that I know works is becoming increasingly hard.  My standards have elevated and are not nearly as low as they were when I began my first Project366 in 2010.  Back then, one of my shots was of an empty “Good & Plenty bag on the sidewalk…yikes!  I look back on that shot which is still up on Flickr with horror and wonder now what I was thinking.

Day 3

While, I’d never consider a shot like that now, I still need to grab a photograph every day.  The pressure to deliver is constant.  There’s almost not an hour in my day that I don’t think about what great shot might be possible with the time remaining.   My perspective is all wrong though.  My job has to come first and when I can the daily shot rises to the top.  The problem is that many of us have high pressure job responsibilities narrowing our opportunity to shoot.  It really sounds like whining and a lame excuse doesn’t it?  Well it is and it isn’t.  The reality of making sure my non photography related responsibilities are done completely and to the best of my ability leaves my passion for photography on the curb for most of the day.

Draught

So, opportunities for an acceptable contribution to my project are mainly limited to the time I have after work.  Generally that’s enough time but it’s still a challenge after a hard day.  It’s a daily question as I make my way from the office to the parking garage and consider the commute home.  What do I want to shoot to get my daily shot?  Where should I go?  Do I want to stray off the beaten path for a new and fresh location to shoot.  How much time out my way will it be, how many miles?  Will there be traffic?  With the increasing price of gas I’ve also considered how much it might cost by adding an extra 20 or 30 miles to my trip home.

Fast Break: 285.366

Now the upside is that I have some decent shots that I wouldn’t otherwise have.  The project forces me to shoot and sometimes presents opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise show themselves.  The downside, and this is more serious for me now, is that I have had to settle for some photographs that I’m not happy with.  Even more chilling, I feel compelled to publish them on Flickr to be accountable to my commitment.  While I don’t consider Flickr as my portfolio, I do want to move towards photographs that are more representational of my style which is increasingly social photography in black and white.  I also want to put my best work out there all the time now.  And that’s the crux, my project photos are not always my best work.  If not for the commitment, they wouldn’t be posted.

The Shadow Knows

So, this will be my last Project366.  It’s been a great learning experience.  I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to shoot lots of photographs every day but needs a bit of a push to get out and do it.  For me, I’ve had that experience and it did help to push me along.

Fashion Specs: 250.366

My photography will always have room for improvement, I don’t anticipate the learning will ever end.  By no means am I at a point where I can say I don’t need to stay sharp by shooting every day.  I do.  But there are days when my shots are just not good enough to share.  But I’ll take a less stressful daily shooting experience and use it to improve my skills, technique and photographs.

The great thing about a Project365 is the push to continually look for your daily…

The great thing about a Project365 is the push to continually look for your daily shot throughout the day or into the night if you've been busy at work!

That was the case with this one for yesterday. It was the end of the day and I still hadn't found my photo until this fuel truck drove into the gas station across the street. The light looked perfect for a night shot and the truck just popped under the station canopy. So it was my last minute shot for yesterday.

A Love/Hate Relationship with a Project366

There are days I can’t wait to publish a daily photo on Flickr® for my Project366.  There are many other days when I dread putting anything on the web.  For those who don’t know, a Project366 (Project365 in a non leap year) is a personal commitment to take at least one photograph each and every day for a full year.  Generally, anyone embarking on such an adventurous challenge will publish their work on the web to share with others who might be following along to be accountable.  Publishing to a website creates something similar to a time stamp on your images so that you can prove to yourself and others that you did actually meet your obligation.

My first shot in my Project366 for 2012. Sunset at Torrey Pines Beach on January 1, 2012.

Here’s my problem with this kind of project and it’s my second one, I should know better.  Sometimes my shot for the day is crap.  I hate posting work that’s not my best to the web but am forced to when I’m committed to publish every day.  I cringe when I look back at a few of my 200+ project images so far this year.  There are some shots that I would never have shared had I not felt the obligation to stay current with my project commitment.  In fact, there have been more than a few days when I’ve seriously considered bailing on the project because I really didn’t want to publish a photo on a particular day.

Maybe, I should have quit.  Perhaps it would have been better to fold when I didn’t feel an image was worthy of sharing.  I hate that there are shots on my Flickr® pages that I really don’t want to be there?  Will anyone looking at my work understand the concept of a Project366 and give me some benefit of the doubt for posting crappy images?  Probably not, that’s a lot to expect.

But I haven’t quit yet.  Maybe I’m crazy.  Perhaps I just don’t care enough about what I’m posting and how it might reflect through the impressions others get of my work.   But I’m not a quitter, never have been.  I’m just stubborn that way.  It’s not that I haven’t made large personal commitments before.

I’ve been through some other personal challenges that required persistence.  Some might call it stubbornness.  I think being stubborn has some benefits if not taken too far.  I’ve run my share of marathons and half marathons, requiring similar commitments as a Project366.  I know how to prepare for and finish challenging events.  I trained for the Boston marathon over one of the worst winters in New England history.  Whether it was raining, sleeting and even in blizzard conditions I trained doggedly to get my daily miles so I’d be ready to run the big one.  I even ran with a broken wrist for the last couple of months after my wife waxed the wood floor at the bottom of the stairs.  The fact that I only had socks on and was running downstairs is irrelevant.   Nobody told me about the waxed floor.  Besides training with an arm cast, there were days when I just didn’t feel like running.  There were some days when I was tired or sick or the weather was pitiful.  I found lots of excuses or made some up just to justify slacking off.  But I still forced myself to train even when I knew my run would feel horrible and my training times would be pathetic.  But those days still contributed to my ability, confidence and fitness to complete a marathon.  Who knows, giving in and skipping training on those discouraging days could have been the difference between quitting and finishing the race.  I do know that it’s likely that without all those training days, I would not have done as well as I did.

Perhaps it’s the same with a Project366.  It’s a marathon of sorts.  There are days when my heart isn’t in it.  But then there are days when I grab an image that’s just amazing too.  Good days are encouraging and inspiring to get through the other days when I just don’t think my pictures cut it.  The good days also inspire me to get out for a shot I can be proud of at the end of the day.  Like Forrest Gump would say, “my mama always said ‘life was like a box of chocolates you never know what you’re gonna get.’”  The same is true for my daily challenge to find a great image that I’m proud to share.

Stairway and bridge to Hilton Hotel in downtown San Diego

So, on bad days or good, I’ll continue to take daily photographs and share them on Flickr®.  I’ll take what I get and learn from it.  After all, it’s all really just exercising my photography skills knowing that unless I’m willing to make and learn from mistakes, I’ll never make the improvements in my photography that I continually strive to achieve.

The images posted here are some of what I consider to be my better ones.  I invite you to browse my Project366 on Flickr® and find the ones that aren’t so good!

Meet Vegas

This is Vegas, our white, tan and grey Yorkie.  He's quite a character and was my last minute subject for my #project366  image yesterday.  He was quite laid back when I grabbed this shot, content to check me out as I grabbed a shot but not about to even think about much else.

Mellow Yellow: 44.366

Took my semi regular noontime walk today. I actually didn’t think I’d be able to, it was threatening to rain most of the morning. I don’t need much of an excuse to not get out and exercise even though I know I have to. I’m still on my calorie watch, trying to lose some pounds. I’m not seriously overweight, just need lose about 25 more pounds :-)

But given the overcast, it was perfect for some close up work. So as I began my walk I started to look for opportunities for some macro work. I didn’t see much until I passed by this flower almost standing by itself on the frontage of one of the big, luxury houses I pass by.

I got down on my knees for this one and worked it as hard as I could to get a sharp shot handheld. I processed it in Nik’s Color Efex Pro 4, now my favorite post processing software. Hope you enjoy this one. Since tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, trust you can find some flowers to take home to your sweetheart…hint, hint!

Thanks for reading!

Price Center UC San Diego: 41.366

The student services area of the Price Center at UC San Diego

Today’s Project366 contribution is a shot of the dining area at the Price Center, UC San Diego.

I was a bit conflicted about this one. I actually liked the overall scene but the big pole in the center right of the frame made me think long and hard about using it. So I worked it in Silver Efex Pro 2 as a black and white and actually grew into it. I liked the tones I got from the shades of light in this large atrium. Hope you’re ok with it too.

Thanks for reading!
