Inspired by Others
Some of my photographs come from the direct inspiration of other photographers I follow on social media or other areas on the web. Last year I joined Kelby Training for the huge portfolio of educational videos they offer. I learn best by watching the experts going about the techniques they use to be successful at their craft.
I love to take photographs of aircraft and am constantly challenged with perspective on the subject of my shots. Do I capture the whole aircraft or just focus on specific areas?
Moose Peterson has a few videos on Kelby that cover photography at air shows. One of the tips that jumped out at me was to capture details on the airplane with a beautiful cloudy blue sky as background. Being in Southern California makes this tough. Our air shows here are typically on clear sunny days with hardly a cloud in the sky at all.
Our recent storm over the weekend and the clearing skies presented a super opportunity to get a shot inspired by Moose’s tips. I captured these at the Miramar Air Station in San Diego using my Fuji X100. I processed them in Silver Efex Pro2 as black and white and just love how they came out. Hope you enjoy them.
Thanks for reading!

Vintage Aircraft
Douglas C-53D Skytrooper taken at the Miramar Airshow in San Diego earlier this year. I love vintage aircraft and this is one of my favorites.
Shot was processed in Silver Efex Pro2.
Long Flight Home
I love vintage aircraft. They’re the first thing I look for when I visit an airshow. The work that goes into restoring these jewels of the air is something I appreciate and am grateful for. The fact that they’re still around for us to enjoy and get a real taste and feel for the aircraft that were commonly flying just forty or fifty years ago.
This was taken at the Miramar air show last month. It’s a Douglas AC-47, a modified DC-3. This particular “gunship” first saw action in Vietnam and it was used for close air support to the troops on the ground. It was able to stay on station for extended periods of time able to be called into action quickly when a hot spot arose on the ground.
I’ve created shots with this perspective before. I really like the impression of flying into infinity.
